Crema Catalana is one of Catalan gastronomy’s most iconic desserts. Its origins date back a few decades when it was prepared to celebrate San José day.

Some evidence suggests that the name originates from the 18th century, when a bishop visited a convent of nuns in Catalonia and they prepared a flan in his honour. Their efforts resulted in a very runny flan which they tried to fix by adding a few ingredients like burnt sugar. The bishop sampled their creation while the sugar was still hot and screamed CREMA! (which translates as “IT’S HOT” in English), hence its enduring name: Crema Catalana.
